We believe strongly that tourism should have a positive impact on the Lake District and the wider environment. In the development of our cottages sustainability was a key consideration, some of the steps we have taken to mitigate our negative effects and promote our positives include;
We have removed the miniature toiletries which are single use plastics in favour of refillable dispensers.
We are installing bee boxes and bird feeders to encourage biodiversity.
Where possible we use local suppliers and support local businesses. Such as with our mini-welcome packs, whereby we have partnered with deli's; Relish and The Honeypot to provide local produce and promote these and other local business to our guests.
We also donate £5 from every stay to local charities, a minimum of £1000 per year.
For 2025 we are supporting Cancer Care South Cumbria, they have supported families close to Coley Cottages deal with bereavement, they deliver thousands of hours of support and counselling to over 2000+ people locally.
In 2024 we supported Growing Well donating £1015. They are a mental health charity which runs environmentally friendly farms in Cumbria which offer meaningful activity and training, all based around participatory work on the field and in their kitchens.
We have also supported, Fix the Fells, Coniston Mountain Rescue and the Cumbria Community Foundation.
For five years we have been working with the charity Something To Look Forward To.
In 2024 we hosted 6 families who have be affected by cancer, through gift stays, which help improve the well-being, relieve the stress and aid the recuperation of those who are experiencing the effects of cancer and its treatment, and their loved ones.
Such as Sam who stayed at Mountain Cottage; 'We had a fantastic time and I got lots of rest and relaxation which was desperately needed, as I was recovering from radiotherapy. The break has had a huge positive impact on us all and even since our return I still feel the benefits of the break. Without your wonderful generosity we would have had no chance of a holiday, especially somewhere so beautiful.'
